Rocket Lawyer Sells a Platform. South Carolina Only Insists on One Piece of It.
A flat $99 buys one year of registered agent service in South Carolina — the registered office, same-day scanning of court papers, and reminders before state deadlines.
SC Registered Agent.org publishes this comparison and sells the competing product, at $99 a year, in this state. Anything below that carries a dollar sign came from Rocket Lawyer's own published pricing during a July 2026 review. Anything that reads like persuasion is us.
Credit Where It Is Due: the Price Holds Still
Registered agent service from Rocket Lawyer is $125 a year, and the figure does not move between membership tiers. Free tier, paid tier, whichever plan you sit on, the agent line prices identically, and our review located no introductory rate scheduled to expire out from under you.
In a market that runs on first-year discounts, that discipline is genuinely unusual and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Nobody paying Rocket Lawyer $125 is being ambushed in year two. The number they showed you is the number that recurs.
The Structure Question Is About Fit, Not Honesty
What Rocket Lawyer actually sells is a legal subscription. Contract templates, document assembly, attorney consultations, a whole workspace for the paperwork side of running a company, with registered agent service occupying one row of that catalogue.
If you will use the rest of it, the $125 is fair and arguably cheap. Ask honestly, though, how many contracts a two-person company drafts in a typical year, and how many attorney consultations it books. For a great many owners the answer to both is none, and paying for a subscription workspace in order to use the address inside it is renting a whole workshop for one tool.

The One Job South Carolina Will Not Let You Do Yourself
Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.
Order HereHere is the reason the agent row deserves separating from the rest of that catalogue.
Almost everything a legal platform sells is optional or substitutable. You can draft your own operating agreement, borrow a template, hire an attorney once, or go without. The registered agent is different, and S.C. Code § 33-44-108 is where the difference is written down. Four kinds of party may hold the post. An individual who lives in South Carolina qualifies. So does a corporation formed here. So does another limited liability company. So does an out-of-state corporation or company that has been authorized to operate in South Carolina.
Read the third of those again. Another limited liability company. One adjective, doing a large amount of work. Your own LLC is not on the list and cannot appoint itself, and the exclusion is not buried in a regulation or an administrative practice; it sits in the statutory text as a single word. South Carolina closed that door with an adjective.
There is a lawful way to keep it in-house, and we will state it rather than talk around it: a member who personally resides in South Carolina may serve as the agent in an individual capacity. That is permitted and it costs nothing. It also puts that person's street address into the public state record and ties them to being findable there through every working day, which is the trade the entire commercial agent industry exists to absorb.
So of everything in a legal subscription, the agent line is the piece South Carolina genuinely requires you to source from outside the company. Buying that piece on its own, at a rate that does not carry a platform behind it, is a defensible way to spend $99.
For that $99: our South Carolina address stands on your public filing instead of your own, court papers reaching us are imaged and posted to your account the same business day with a notice sent behind them, and ordinary business mail is scanned at a stated $15 an item.
Ninety dollars is BetterLegal's published rate, which puts a floor beneath us that we are not going to claim we sit on. Ninety-nine sits close to that floor and stays there through every renewal.
Changing Agents in South Carolina After Rocket Lawyer
Ten dollars and one notice. The state uses a single filing to record a new designated office, a new agent, or a new address for the current one, and the Secretary of State collects the fee whether the document arrives by mail or through the Secretary's online filing portal. Nothing needs to be negotiated with the provider you are leaving.
Appoint first, then file, then cancel. The notice has a space for an incoming agent and no space for an empty one, which reflects a duty the statute describes as continuous rather than periodic. Enrol with us, let the notice carry our details, check the state's business search for the corrected entry, and end the Rocket Lawyer subscription only once the record shows the change.
