LegalZoom Wants $249 a Year for a South Carolina Address. The State Values a Change of Agent at $10.
A flat $99 buys one year of registered agent service in South Carolina — the registered office, same-day scanning of court papers, and reminders before state deadlines.
We will put the conflict of interest in the first line rather than the last. SC Registered Agent.org competes directly with LegalZoom for South Carolina agent work, we charge $99 a year for it, and a reader who acts on this argument becomes our customer. The LegalZoom pricing set out below came from that company's own published material during a July 2026 review, and we have neither rounded it nor dramatized it.
What the Brand Genuinely Delivers
LegalZoom is the name most owners can produce from memory when the subject of business filings comes up, and there is real substance behind the recall. Two decades of operation, a support organization that answers, attorney access sold alongside the filing products, and a reputation stable enough that a nervous first-time founder can hand over a credit card without doing any research. Plenty of people value exactly that, and buying it is not a mistake.
The pricing is where our argument starts, and it starts with a structure rather than with any complaint about service.
$249, Flat, on Automatic Renewal
Registered agent service from LegalZoom runs $249 a year in South Carolina. It renews automatically. Our July 2026 review turned up no introductory rate, no first-year concession, and no bundled discount that lowers the standalone figure. That consistency is worth a word of credit, because a price with nothing hidden behind it is easier to plan around than a teaser that doubles in month thirteen.
What the consistency does not do is change what the money buys. Set beside our $99, the difference is $150 every twelve months, indefinitely, for the same statutory function.

An Arithmetic South Carolina Makes Easy
Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.
Order HereEvery state supplies its own conversion rate for a premium like this one, and South Carolina's is unusually clean. A change of registered agent here costs ten dollars. Divide the LegalZoom annual rate by that figure and you get very close to twenty-five: one year of the premium brand is priced at nearly twenty-five complete agent changes on the South Carolina record.
Nobody needs twenty-five agent changes. The point of the comparison is scale. A single year of LegalZoom's agent service costs what South Carolina would charge to move your appointment two dozen times over, and the state is the party that actually decides whether an agent is doing its job.
The Two Lines Your Money Is Renting
Look at what appears in the public record and the value proposition sharpens. A South Carolina company carries a designated office in the state, an office that is not required to be anywhere the business actually operates, and it separately carries an agent for service of process. Two entries, both continuous, both showing a street address.
That address is the product. Whether the entry reads LegalZoom or reads us, South Carolina asks the same three things of whoever occupies it: qualify under the state's agent statute, be reachable at a real street address during working hours, and pass along what arrives without sitting on it. The record does not grade the logo, and the state grants no additional standing to an agent that costs $249.
Here is our side of it. Our South Carolina address takes both lines. Service of process is scanned and released to your portal the same business day it reaches us, with a notification sent at the same moment. General mail is scanned at $15 an item, printed here rather than discovered later. The renewal is $99, which is what you paid the first time.
A smaller number than ours does exist in print, and it belongs to BetterLegal at $90. Our claim stops well short of cheapest: $99 is among the least expensive rates published for South Carolina, and unlike a promotional figure it is also the renewal figure.
Taking the South Carolina Appointment Back From LegalZoom
The state's half of this takes one form and ten dollars. A single document serves whichever of three cases applies: you are replacing the agent, relocating the designated office, or correcting the address on record for the agent already appointed. It carries no form number, because Secretary of State forms here are identified by name alone. File it on paper or run the change through Business Entities Online, whichever you prefer; the fee is the same either way and your outgoing agent has no say in the matter.
Appoint before you cancel. That is the whole of the sequencing advice, and it exists because South Carolina expects the agent line to be occupied every day your company is on the books, including the days a change is in transit. Sign up here, we supply the completed notice, you file it and confirm the new entry in the state's business search, and the LegalZoom subscription comes off last. Our change of agent page sets out the same sequence at greater length.
Do it while the LegalZoom renewal date is still comfortably ahead of you rather than a week away, and the transition costs you nothing beyond the state's ten dollars.
